The skin is the body’s largest organ and it is vital to our health and survival. It acts as a bodyguard to protect us from infection and potential environmental damage. It’s also like a working laboratory with complex chemical reactions constantly going on to keep cells regenerating, repairing damage and even converting sunlight into vitamin D.

It is waterproof and a great shock absorber. It works as a thermostat to regulate our body temperature and it allows us to experience the wonderful sensation of touch. The skin truly is an amazing organ that does so much to take care of us, the least we can do is to take great care of it.

Oil acts as the skin’s natural protective barrier, which hydrates and nourishes the skin. Natural plant oils help to fortify and strengthen this barrier as they are similar to the oil that is produced by the skin, so they are easily recognised and absorbed without clogging the pores. These oils originate from the nuts or seeds of trees, fruits, vegetables and flowers and are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, omega oils and fatty acids, which are vital to well being, health and beauty. The use of natural plant oils supports the production of collagen, which is the key to radiant, healthy, glowing skin.

Unlike many other skincare products, Ermana products do not contain water. Instead they are made of just natural oils, butters and waxes. Water is sometimes used by manufacturers to bulk out the product so it appears that you are getting more for your money. Although water is a natural ingredient, when used in skincare, it requires a preservative to prevent it from growing bacteria and other nasties. Ermana do not believe in using preservatives as these can sometimes cause more harm than good.

Water based moisturisers don’t hydrate the skin. This is a common misconception due to the name. Moisturisers don’t make the skin moist or hydrate it, rather, they provide a barrier on the skin to stop moisture or water getting out. Water will be lost to the environment in the winter months. It will also evaporate from the body under strong sunlight. All sorts of other factors like stress, lack of exercise, lack of sleep and hormonal changes may cause the body to lose water as do the natural metabolic processes. So it is important to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water, juices, soups etc. You should also use a moisturiser to help keep the water content locked into the skin. But a water based one is not the answer. Water based moisturisers may make the skin feel moist and smooth to the touch but this is of no real benefit to the skin in the long run. It only feels good on the surface layer but can’t penetrate deep down into the dermis and hypodermis skin layers where most of the water content that keeps the skin hydrated resides.

Using oil based products are much more effective at protecting and nourishing the skin as many of the oils will penetrate the skins layers and also does a good job of mimicking the skins natural oil or sebum. Thus providing a protective, oily layer on the surface of the skin that helps prevent water loss.

Oil based products also go a lot further than water based ones therefore you only need to use a small amount for the product to be effective.

The oil cleansing method is a gentle way to cleanse without stripping the skin of its natural precious oils. When oil is massaged into the skin it dissolves dirt, make up and impurities that have been stuck in the pores. Oil cleansing provides the necessary moisture to prevent skin from over-producing oil. We recommend using a hot muslin cloth with Ermana Cleanse Balm to open the pores and allow the oil to be easily removed. Your skin will be gently but thoroughly cleaned, leaving nothing but a healthy glow.
