Your skincare doesn't always need more water. Sometimes it needs more of what your skin actually needs.
At Ermana, we have always done things a little differently.
You won't find traditional moisturising creams or lotions at the heart of our skincare range. Instead, we choose water-free, oil-based formulations made with plant oils, butters, waxes and essential oils.
Why?
Because we believe skincare should be concentrated in the ingredients that support the skin, rather than using water as the main ingredient.
And this is particularly relevant as our skin changes through midlife.
So, what's actually in a moisturiser?
Pick up a conventional moisturiser, cream or lotion and you'll often find that water is one of the first ingredients on the INCI list.
That isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Water gives a product its fluidity and allows water-soluble ingredients to be incorporated. It can also give the immediate sensation of hydrated, softer skin.
But water is also a relatively inexpensive ingredient and, once it has been added to a formulation, the product needs a system to keep it stable and safe.
That's where emulsifiers, preservatives, stabilisers and other formulation ingredients come in.
A typical cream is essentially an emulsion: a mixture of water and oil that normally wouldn't naturally stay together.
A lotion is usually a lighter version of this type of formulation, while a richer cream generally contains a higher proportion of oils and fats.
Again, none of this makes creams "bad" skincare. Good formulations can be extremely effective.
But at Ermana, we asked a different question:
What if we took the water out and concentrated on the oils, butters and other plant-based ingredients instead?
What does a moisturiser actually do?
The word "moisturiser" can be slightly misleading because different ingredients perform different jobs.
A well-formulated moisturiser can contain three important types of ingredients:
Humectants
Ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid attract and hold water in the outer layers of the skin.
Emollients
These help soften and smooth the skin by filling gaps between skin cells and improving the feel and flexibility of the skin.
Many plant oils and butters are excellent emollients.
Occlusives
These help reduce water loss from the skin by forming a protective layer over the surface.
Some plant oils and butters can also contribute to this function.
So when you apply a cream, you're not simply "adding moisture". You're helping the skin retain water, improve its surface and support its protective barrier.
So why does Ermana choose water-free?
Because we want our formulations to be concentrated rather than diluted with water.
Our face oils and balms are made predominantly from plant-derived lipids — the oils, butters and waxes that give the formulations their texture and function.
Instead of starting with water and adding oils to it, we start with the oils.
That means when you apply an Ermana face oil, you're applying a concentrated blend of ingredients such as jojoba, apricot, macadamia, safflower and sunflower oils, together with vitamin E and carefully selected essential oils.
There is no water sitting at the top of the ingredient list.
There is no need to create an oil-and-water emulsion.
And because our products are water-free, they don't require the same type of broad-spectrum preservative system that a water-containing cream requires.
We can keep our ingredient lists focused on the oils, butters and botanical ingredients that give the product its purpose.
Plant oils aren't just "oil"
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about facial oils.
A good facial oil isn't simply something greasy that sits on the skin.
Plant oils contain a complex mixture of fatty acids and other naturally occurring compounds. Different oils have different fatty acid profiles and different characteristics on the skin.
For example, jojoba is technically a liquid wax rather than a conventional triglyceride oil, while oils such as sunflower and safflower are rich in linoleic acid.
Plant butters bring another dimension, providing richer textures and helping to soften and protect the skin.
This is why the choice of oil matters.
At Ermana, we don't simply choose oils because they sound natural. We choose them for their properties, their skin feel and how they work together in a formulation.
And what about dry or mature skin?
As we move through midlife, our skin can become drier and more vulnerable to moisture loss.
Changes in hormones, the environment and the natural ageing process can all influence the skin barrier and its ability to retain water.
This is where an oil-based routine can be particularly appealing.
But here's an important point:
Oil doesn't hydrate the skin in the same way that water or a humectant does.
Instead, plant oils and butters can help soften the skin, support the lipid-rich barrier and reduce water loss.
That's why we often recommend applying our oils to slightly damp skin.
The water is already there.
The oil helps provide the lipids and barrier-supporting ingredients that help keep that moisture from disappearing as quickly.
It's a simple approach:
Add water with your skincare routine. Then help your skin hold onto it.
Why water-free also makes sense for Ermana
There is another reason we chose this approach.
We believe skincare should be about less, but better.
Our water-free formulations are highly concentrated. A small amount goes a long way, which means you don't need to slather your face in product.
They're also naturally suited to small-batch production because we're not creating conventional water-and-oil emulsions.
And by choosing anhydrous formulations, we avoid putting water into the product simply to create a particular texture.
For us, this is part of a wider philosophy:
Use fewer ingredients. Choose them carefully. Make them work hard.
Does that mean creams are bad?
Absolutely not.
There are some excellent creams and lotions on the market, including formulations containing beautiful plant oils, ceramides, glycerin and other skin-supportive ingredients.
We're not here to tell you that one format is universally better than another.
We're saying that water-free skincare is the right choice for Ermana.
It allows us to put plant oils, butters and botanical ingredients at the centre of our formulations rather than water.
It's why our products feel concentrated.
It's why a few drops of face oil can be enough.
And it's why we have stayed committed to this approach for more than a decade.
Skin doesn't need complicated. It needs considered.
Your skin is an intelligent, living barrier.
It doesn't need a 10-step routine or a bathroom cabinet full of products.
It needs the right conditions to do its job.
At Ermana, that means carefully selected plant oils, butters, waxes and botanical ingredients, blended in small batches and designed to support your skin rather than overwhelm it.
Water-free. Plant-powered. Concentrated skincare.
Because sometimes the best skincare isn't about adding more.
It's about choosing better.
