The Truth About Plant Oils vs Essential Oils - Part 1

Plant Oils — Nature’s Nourishment for Skin

The rise of plant oils

Plant oils — sometimes called carrier oils or base oils — have become a cornerstone of natural skincare. But they’re more than a passing trend. Research shows that many plant oils can genuinely help strengthen and restore the skin barrier, thanks to their rich composition of essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants.

What are plant oils?

Plant oils are extracted from the seeds, nuts, or fruits of plants such as jojoba, apricot, macadamia, sunflower and argan. Chemically, they’re made up of triglycerides and wax esters — the same types of lipids found naturally in human skin. This makes them highly compatible and able to nourish, soften and protect without disrupting the skin’s balance.

What the science says

Several studies highlight the benefits of plant oils when used correctly:

  • A 2017 review found that certain botanical oils can reduce inflammation, support barrier repair, and protect against environmental damage (Lin et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences).
  • A 2013 study compared olive oil and sunflower seed oil on adult skin. Results showed sunflower oil improved hydration and barrier function, while olive oil actually damaged the skin barrier and increased water loss (Danby et al., Pediatric Dermatology).
  • Jojoba oil, in particular, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, making it suitable for sensitive or reactive skin types.

Why fatty acids matter

The fatty acid profile of an oil determines how it behaves on your skin:

  • Linoleic acid (omega-6) — supports barrier repair and hydration. Found in sunflower, grape seed, and evening primrose oil.
  • Oleic acid (omega-9) — rich and emollient, but can be too heavy or barrier-disruptive for some skin types. Found in olive and avocado oil.
  • Palmitic and stearic acids — protective, waxy fatty acids that help lock in moisture.

The takeaway? Not all oils are equal — it’s about choosing the right oil for your skin’s needs.
